OKINAWA GOJURYU KENKYUKAI
Abbotsford Melbourne Dojo

Goju Ryu Kenkyukai
Goju Ryu, often described as the hard–soft way, is the study of balance, strength and suppleness working as one. Training develops decisive, direct power alongside smooth, circular motion, reflecting the deeper
Okinawan understanding of harmony in everyday life.
Within the Okinawan Goju Ryu Kenkyukai, the teachings passed down by Taira Masaji Sensei are preserved with integrity. Emphasis is placed on correct application (bunkai), functional movement, and methods practised in Okinawa itself, ensuring the art remains practical, alive, and true to its origins.
VINCENT BUSUTTIL - Sensei
A Living Tradition of Body, Mind, and Spirit.
Vincent Busuttil’s approach to martial arts is deeply rooted in the authentic traditions of Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-Do, as preserved through the Goju-Ryu Kenkyukai. His teaching philosophy is built upon the timeless triad of Body, Mind, and Spirit, a complete system designed not only to develop skilled martial artists, but resilient, capable human beings.
The Physical Discipline – The Body
The physical foundation of Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Kenkyukai is both scientific and traditional. Training develops strength, conditioning, coordination, and functional movement through:
-
Classical Goju-Ryu kata and bunkai
-
Precise striking, kicking, and close-range techniques
-
Body conditioning rooted in Okinawan methodology
-
Breath control, posture, and structure
-
Physical resilience, balance, and longevity
This aspect forges a body that is strong yet supple, capable of power, control, and endurance — reflecting the very essence of Go (hard) and Ju (soft).
The Psychological Discipline – The Mind
Beyond physical technique lies the cultivation of awareness, adaptability, and calm under pressure. Vincent places strong emphasis on the practical application of Goju-Ryu for real-world self-defence, blending traditional principles with modern understanding.
This includes:
-
Self-defence psychology and situational awareness
-
Tactical movement, timing, and positioning
-
Strategy, adaptability, and decision-making under stress
-
Mental alertness, discipline, and composure
Students learn not just how to defend themselves, but when and why, developing clarity of thought and confidence in challenging situations.
The Spiritual Discipline – The Spirit
The spiritual dimension is the heart of Vincent’s teaching and the defining pillar of the Kenkyukai approach. Training becomes a vehicle for personal empowerment and lifelong growth, extending far beyond the dojo.
This includes:
-
Character development and personal responsibility
-
Emotional control and inner strength
-
Respect, humility, and perseverance
-
Purpose, discipline, and self-mastery
Martial arts, in this sense, is not something you simply do; it is something you become. Students are guided to apply the principles of Goju-Ryu to every aspect of life, cultivating resilience, integrity, and balance.
Lineage & Lifelong Study
In 2014, driven by a deep commitment to authentic Goju-Ryu Karate, Vincent travelled to Okinawa, the birthplace of Goju-Ryu, to train directly under Taira Masaji Sensei, Head Master of the Goju-Ryu Kenkyukai. Since then, he has returned to Okinawa on numerous occasions to continue his study at the source.
Vincent currently holds a 6th Dan Black Belt in Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Kenkyukai under Taira Sensei, a reflection of decades of disciplined training, teaching, and continued refinement.
A Life Dedicated to the Martial Way
Vincent Busuttil is a martial artist who has dedicated his life to study, teaching, and service through the martial arts. His daily passion is not only to preserve traditional knowledge, but to help others grow physically, mentally, and spiritually,
just as the martial arts have shaped his own life.
His mission is simple yet profound:
to reach as many people as possible through
martial arts, and to empower them with skills
that extend far beyond the dojo.
